Quantum Explored Ways to Monitor Soil Erosion
Earlier this year the Kharkiv IT Cluster hosted Boot Camp, the initiative that gives students an opportunity to gain hands-on experience utilizing modern technologies to solve acute social problems, and Quantum was pleased to mentor one of the teams. With extensive experience in satellite imagery processing for deforestation monitoring platform ClearCut, as well as other geo solutions, we decided to validate the idea of detecting soil erosion using aerial images. The project ended up with a hackathon, where the team developed a program that monitors soil erosion using computer vision and machine learning.
During the hackathon, the team, mentored by Quantum, has developed a program that displays to the user the map of areas exposed to erosion and helps monitor the dynamics of erosion level. This can be used to coordinate the efforts of environmental institutions and agricultural holdings in the region to combat soil degradation.
“Soil erosion is a huge problem not only for agriculture, but for the entire ecological system. We, as a company with deep experience in creating data-driven geo solutions, try to help solve complex challenges in the industry,” says Oleksandr Proskurin, Quantum’s Python Developer, who was mentoring the team. “Soil erosion can be monitored and controlled using machine learning and computer vision, that’s why we’ve decided to choose this topic. The model created by students has achieved 95% precision of erosion recognition.”
The event fulfilled two of our goals at once; share and strengthen our experience in agritech solutions, and participate in social projects that underlie our CSR program.
Having successfully used computer vision for tracking deforestation, Quantum continues to support ecological initiatives and help improve the environment. We are not going to stop there. We plan to further develop and maintain platforms for monitoring soil erosion, detecting deforestation with ClearCut, and working on other projects aimed to change our environment for the better.
