Quantum developed a secure Doctor AI Assistant that ingests and synthesizes patients’ medical information from every accessible source, providing doctors with instant, context-rich answers through a natural conversational interface. This AI-powered assistant was custom-built to handle the complexities of medical data and to operate entirely within the clinic’s private infrastructure.
Key aspects of the solution include:
1. Data Ingestion:
The assistant connects directly to the clinic’s EMR database and other data silos, pulling in structured records such as visit notes, lab results, and medication lists. Additionally, all relevant PDF reports and scanned documents (including handwritten notes and letters) are digitized using OCR and indexed. This creates a unified, queryable repository of every patient’s medical history.
2. Natural Language Querying:
Doctors can ask complex questions in plain language, just as they would to a colleague. For example: “Find all prescriptions connected with high CRP and provide an explanation.” The assistant’s Large Language Model has been tailored to interpret medical terminology and intent, so it understands queries in the context of healthcare.
3. Context-Aware Query Analysis:
This means when a query is received, the assistant intelligently searches the unified data repository to find the most pertinent information, and then the LLM generates a synthesized answer grounded in those facts. For instance, if asked about “high CRP levels,” the assistant will correlate lab results with the timeline of prescriptions and doctors’ notes. The result is a coherent, chronologically ordered explanation of the patient’s condition and care – essentially weaving together data from disparate sources into a single narrative.
4. Adaptive Response Presentation:
The output is delivered instantly in the most useful format:
- Text Summaries: For questions like, “Summarize this patient’s cardiac history.”
- Organized Tables: To display a chronological history of lab results.
- Visual Charts: To show vital signs of blood work trends over time.
The ability to automatically choose the optimal output format means doctors get information in a digestible form – a narrative report, a table of results, a timeline, or a visualization – without extra steps. This adaptive formatting goes beyond basic Q&A, effectively turning raw data into an easy-to-read medical brief or graphic, depending on what the physician needs to see.
5. Secure On-Premises Deployment:
Given the sensitivity of personal health information, the entire solution is deployed within the clinic’s own secure IT environment. All data processing and AI computations occur on-premises. The LLM is hosted on the clinic’s servers, orchestrated with the LangChain framework to manage the flow of queries and retrieval. No patient data ever leaves the clinic’s firewall – this guarantees compliance with privacy regulations such as GDPR. We implemented role-based access controls and audit logging within the assistant as well, ensuring that only authorized staff can query the system and that all AI responses are traceable back to source documents. This focus on security and privacy was a crucial aspect of the project, on par with the AI functionality itself.
