Quantum’s Data Science team is among the winners in the Greenhouse Challenge

November 10, 2021

At the 3rd International Autonomous Greenhouse Challenge held the previous week in the Netherlands, our team showed an excellent result with a strong focus on yield and quality. The combination of knowledge in Data Science, Crop Science, and innovative approach to the challenge – the factors that led our team to the final phase!

The jury selected the five teams for the final phase – growing fully autonomous lettuce crops reaching high yield and quality through sustainable use of resources such as energy and water.

Special thanks to Michael Yushchuk, Kostiantyn Isaienkov, Nikita Rogovoy, and our DS team for carrying out such a great job.

About the Challenge

The challenge organized by Wageningen University & Research and Tencent has its three main phases:
– Recruitment of AI teams and scouting of talents – Machine Learning and Computer Vision experts teams prove their potential in an online hackathon.
– Twenty-four hours hackathon – pre-selection of 5 teams for greenhouse growing experiment.
– Greenhouse growing experiment itself – the best ranking teams will get access to online climate and crop simulators. They must grow lettuce crops remotely, only using their own artificial intelligence algorithms.

During the competition, the teams have a focal point the autonomy to control algorithms for the greenhouse climate and the crop rather than the complexity of the crop.
